Signs of the Times

Old signs incorporated into interior decor are a hallmark of vintage modern living. Whether from bus, train or gas stations, or even subways or chemist shops, signage from another time can be both chic and nostalgic, especially when mixed with other pieces you love. Here are some beautiful examples.

Vintage Modern in Sunny Florida {Freshly Designed}

Here’s a small holiday treat for you! I was able to photograph this gorgeous vintage modern home in Florida just as the season began. What an inspirational mix! New Eames and Cherner chairs along side mid-century gems, flowing silk curtains in the most scrumptious apple green, Belgian linen upholstery in the dining room, contemporary art, worn leather in almost every room, and a wrap-around porch for enjoying the balmy Florida weather.

The owner had it designed not too long ago, but now must let it all go due to a job relocation. Most will be listed on bellepatine.com over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out. Sad for him, no doubt, but there will be smiles on the faces of the lucky ones who end up with these treasures. And with this post, we can all share his memories of this beautiful home.

White Christmas: Dietlind Wolf

Visual designer and propstylist Dietlind Wolf has an incredible eye for color, emotion and composition. Her style is restrained, yet luxurious. This particular collection of images is like a visual deep breath, conjuring pleasant daydreams of a serene and peaceful holiday gathering. With all the busy bustle of the season, a clean white palette can bring a welcome sense of calm to the home. Simple beauty makes room for the deeper hopes that we cherish during this season – for kindness, generosity, comfort, and peace on earth – even in our small corner of it.

Classy, Eclectic Dining {Fresh Start Mondays}

For many of us, the holidays bring celebratory gatherings with loved ones, so what better setting in which to enjoy one another than a beautiful dining room? I’m inspired by the artful blending of eclectic styles and eras; keeping color schemes simple serves to highlight the special pieces in the room even further. Whether the result is rustic, feminine, modern or all of the above, it just doesn’t get better than white, wood and neutrals for classic dining.

Of Bottles and Bars

I found the most fantastic Czechoslovakian seltzer bottle on a recent buying trip, and it’s got me thinking about the comforts of the home bar. These days, we appreciate the pleasures of mixing cocktails at our own convenience, and thanks to the ubiquitous influence of Mad Men we’re doing it with renewed appreciation for mid-century style and hospitality. Seltzer bottles (a.k.a. soda siphons) add a touch of timelessness to any barware collection. Once retired from active service, their shape remains pleasing to the eye and is even more intriguing in collections.

Shower Show {Fresh Start Monday}

housetohome.uk.com wet room

Aaaaahhhhhh! That Monday morning shower is what really wakes my brain to the fact that a fresh new week has begun. So today I wanted to share my favorite bath design with you, the wet room. Most commonly, a wet room is without walls or barriers, completely waterproofed (think gorgeous tile throughout) and has a floor that gently slopes to a central drain. This means that the shower is free standing, and for some reason I just love that feeling of open space. The week just has to start on a beautiful note if it begins in one of these shower spaces, right!?

Colorful Enamelware

If you’ve been to my spaces (online or on land) or seen much of this blog, you’ve probably noticed that I’m a neutral-hues kind of gal. It’s my tendency to shy away from brights in favor of more faded, subdued tones. But when I saw the grand old gobbler below, I couldn’t resist his cheery self. Vintage enamelware brings together form and function – a blissful union, in my opinion – and does so with great pizzazz and character. This rare, colorful post is brought to you by the celebratory shades of the holiday season, and one radiant turkey.

BZDesign {Freshly Designed}

Barbara Zaretsky of BZDesign is an Asheville textile artist who creates gorgeous home interiors and wearables. Her work is soothing and beautiful; pillows, wall art, and table runners that enhance any design era, and wearables I would describe as minimalist statement pieces.

Barbara believes that functional textiles enhance our lives, that less is more, and that what’s left unsaid is as important as what is. This understated elegance is what I love about her work. She uses natural dyes, locally milled cotton and hand-wovens from India that start out white and are transformed by chestnut extracts. She uses a shibori clamp-resist technique for the first layer of surface design and then block prints or embroiders. One of the newest design features of her line is a plant-based color of red that she describes as warm and full of depth.

Barbara’s handmade home design and fashion can be purchased and viewed at her design studio in the Asheville River Arts District, at the Cotton Mill Studios building, 122 Riverside Drive, Studio D, Asheville, NC, or online at BZDesign. If you are in town, treat yourself to a visit to her beautiful studio (Mon-Sat, 10-4). And if you are interested in learning textile art techniques, check out Asheville’s Cloth Fiber Workshop that Barbara founded and directs.

Barking Up the Right Table

Tree stump tables are everywhere these days, and as far as I’m concerned they’ve never gone out of style. Nestled beside a victorian wingback or a mid-century sofa, these rustic woodsy pieces invite Mother Nature into even the most polished rooms, adding both beauty and function to the spaces they inhabit. Naturally, I was thrilled to find a gorgeous vintage tree trunk table to offer at belle patine (and a fine specimen, too!). The rough texture of wood layers beautifully against the smooth, upholstered curve of an armchair or the plush of a shaggy rug. Being green never looked so lovely.
