Barbara Zaretsky of BZDesign is an Asheville textile artist who creates gorgeous home interiors and wearables. Her work is soothing and beautiful; pillows, wall art, and table runners that enhance any design era, and wearables I would describe as minimalist statement pieces.
Barbara believes that functional textiles enhance our lives, that less is more, and that what’s left unsaid is as important as what is. This understated elegance is what I love about her work. She uses natural dyes, locally milled cotton and hand-wovens from India that start out white and are transformed by chestnut extracts. She uses a shibori clamp-resist technique for the first layer of surface design and then block prints or embroiders. One of the newest design features of her line is a plant-based color of red that she describes as warm and full of depth.
Barbara’s handmade home design and fashion can be purchased and viewed at her design studio in the Asheville River Arts District, at the Cotton Mill Studios building, 122 Riverside Drive, Studio D, Asheville, NC, or online at BZDesign. If you are in town, treat yourself to a visit to her beautiful studio (Mon-Sat, 10-4).
