Romantic Reds {Color Inspiration}

Today is grey and chilly in the mountains, a reminder that winter is far from over. Cold winds call for warm colors, and with Valentine’s Day upon us, I think splashes of red will do the trick. In shades of ripe cherries, rusty metal and burgundy wine, red enlivens our senses and woos our hearts. May you be inspired to put some love into your life with romantic red.

Pink & Gray Perfection {Fresh Start Monday}

I love the softer hues of pinks and grays, the two colors in their more neutral tones. But I also love them bold and intense against a white wash of wall. Keep an eye out this week and I bet you’ll see some aspect of this gorgeous combination at least once in a sunset, a beautiful textile, a cozy bedroom, a tablescape, somewhere! Have a wonderful week, and don’t forget to enter our giveaway!

Kilim Me Softly

One of the great things about the vintage modern lifestyle is the ability to repurpose old items for new uses. Antique kilim rugs combine rich colors with unique geometric shapes that are undeniably beautiful as floor coverings. However, kilims past their prime can be used in numerous other ways to inject an exotic, yet cozy flair. One popular transformation is to use them as pillow covers (I have two beautiful ones in my store right now, here and here), but there are lots of other applications, too. Aren’t those shoes just so snazzy?

White Christmas: Dietlind Wolf

Visual designer and propstylist Dietlind Wolf has an incredible eye for color, emotion and composition. Her style is restrained, yet luxurious. This particular collection of images is like a visual deep breath, conjuring pleasant daydreams of a serene and peaceful holiday gathering. With all the busy bustle of the season, a clean white palette can bring a welcome sense of calm to the home. Simple beauty makes room for the deeper hopes that we cherish during this season – for kindness, generosity, comfort, and peace on earth – even in our small corner of it.

Classy, Eclectic Dining {Fresh Start Mondays}

For many of us, the holidays bring celebratory gatherings with loved ones, so what better setting in which to enjoy one another than a beautiful dining room? I’m inspired by the artful blending of eclectic styles and eras; keeping color schemes simple serves to highlight the special pieces in the room even further. Whether the result is rustic, feminine, modern or all of the above, it just doesn’t get better than white, wood and neutrals for classic dining.

Of Bottles and Bars

I found the most fantastic Czechoslovakian seltzer bottle on a recent buying trip, and it’s got me thinking about the comforts of the home bar. These days, we appreciate the pleasures of mixing cocktails at our own convenience, and thanks to the ubiquitous influence of Mad Men we’re doing it with renewed appreciation for mid-century style and hospitality. Seltzer bottles (a.k.a. soda siphons) add a touch of timelessness to any barware collection. Once retired from active service, their shape remains pleasing to the eye and is even more intriguing in collections.

What’s New, Pussycat?

The last couple of months have been a whirlwind of activity for us, and exciting things are happening both online and on land.  We’ve given Design Flutter a whole new look – isn’t it lovely? – and we’ve been expanding and refining our retail spaces at The Screen Door and The Antique Tobacco Barn.

But perhaps most exciting of all is that at long last… drumroll please… our beautiful new online store is open for business! Now you can happily peruse and purchase our fabulous vintage mix in person or in your pajamas – whatever floats your boat.

Lots more to come soon. Meanwhile, here’s a sampling of the eclectic mix of high-quality vintage available at bellepatine - hop over and check it out!

ditte isager

Yesterday I experienced the photography of Dutch artist Ditte Isager for the first time. Her photos took my breath away. She describes her style as “simple noridc”. These photos are part of a series she did of the carpenter Andrea Brugi’s work.
