A Place in Madrid

Imagine having a get-away in Spain. It’s about 750 square feet, just big enough to live well (not too much to clean!). You designed it with a vintage modern vibe, lots of antiques and jots of beautiful textiles, color and pattern against a clean background. You’ve created an inspired entry with a curved copper rod and puddling drapes. The bathroom is so nice. All is set within ancient timber ceilings and old shuttered windows. A perfect place to enjoy after a day of sight-seeing and museum-hopping. Go ahead, enjoy the trip! You’ll be back by the time you finish reading this post. Have a great weekend!

Pink & Gray Perfection {Fresh Start Monday}

I love the softer hues of pinks and grays, the two colors in their more neutral tones. But I also love them bold and intense against a white wash of wall. Keep an eye out this week and I bet you’ll see some aspect of this gorgeous combination at least once in a sunset, a beautiful textile, a cozy bedroom, a tablescape, somewhere! Have a wonderful week, and don’t forget to enter our giveaway!

Eames and Herman Miller in the Home Office

Mid-century designers Charles and Ray Eames and Herman Miller created some of the most iconic and influential furniture shapes of the last hundred years.  Their look is as fresh and relevant as it was in the 1950′s, and their iconic chair designs add a vintage modern kick to a slew of spaces from dining rooms to desks. I especially love the look of modern chairs in the home office, and I am so thrilled to offer a beautiful, authentic Eames Herman Miller desk chair in my shop. Here’s to great seating in our home workspaces.

What’s Curvy, Sturdy and Goes All Over?

Answer: The classic Cherner chair! Eight Cherner side chairs are among the items that I am selling from the vintage modern Florida home that I posted about last week. I had not seen or perched on one before coming upon these. I fell in love instantly with the swan-like, sculptural form.

These molded plywood icons were first designed in 1958 by Norman Cherner, whose legacy continues today with the Cherner Chair Company run by his sons. Cherner’s design works in any space or atmosphere; cottage, rustic, vintage modern, contemporary, industrial, you name it. No wonder this “dream-lined” seating is still so sought-after today. How can you go wrong with gorgeous, versatile, sturdy seating originally designed mid-century!?

Signs of the Times

Old signs incorporated into interior decor are a hallmark of vintage modern living. Whether from bus, train or gas stations, or even subways or chemist shops, signage from another time can be both chic and nostalgic, especially when mixed with other pieces you love. Here are some beautiful examples.

Missing Brooklyn {Fresh Start Monday}

Remodelista: Elizabeth Roberts in Brooklyn 7

Hoping you had a tasty and cozy Thanksgiving!

This bright, minimalist “Fresh Start Monday” is my inspiration to start the upcoming new year with a clean, streamlined space. Seeing this gorgeous home makes me miss my 17 years of Brooklyn brownstone living. Those beautiful (non-working) fireplaces, the long railroad layouts with tall staircases (look at that black lacquer rise!!), the old bathroom tiling and the pre-war parquet floors are all the hallmarks of Brooklyn brownstone living.

Elizabeth Roberts is a designer living in Brooklyn, and this Italianate is one of her most recent projects, and her home. I grabbed this from Remodelista, see all the post and photos here.

All the Pretty Peacocks

The peacock chair, also known as the fanback or fan chair, has been an interior design darling for decades, and it’s making a comeback. While its dramatic shape and scale make an iconic statement, this wicker damsel is surprisingly versatile, lending elegance and panache to well-curated abodes of all styles. If you’re looking for a peacock of your own, check out this pretty pair of chairs over at belle patine – we think Elizabeth Taylor would approve.

Fresh Start Monday

http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/04/true-north/?scp=1&sq=mats%20gustafson&st=cse

I hope this heavenly vision starts your week off on a perfect note. It is the home of Mats Gufstafson, an artist/illustrator in Stockhom. I especially love the sheepskin covered chairs around the mid-century modern coffee table for a cozy, candlelit chatting area, in addition to the sofa. But, then again, I especially love everything in every room of this home (the gray, the art, that fireplace!, the view, the rugs!!) Wishing you a wonderful week.

I grabbed this from Sanctuary. Read the original NYTimes artical here.

Industrial Loft Lust

march 2011 italian elle decor

This Dutch loft made me realize a little more about belle patine style (via March 2011 Italian Elle Decor). It’s all about the mix of eras and design styles, but its also about putting the conventional and the irreverant or odd side-by-side. I love the mannequin standing sentinal over the ancient religious paintings, all the leather, the office draped in red velvet, floor to ceiling windows, and the artistic mantra painted across the living room wall … not to mention the light, white, wood and cement … but of course!
